THIS WEEK ON NEXT GEN, WE RUIN SIMCITY 2000.
Simcity 2000 was one of my favourite games. Even though I usually ran into deficit (when I didn't use cheats which was 90% of the time) due to my... excellent management skills I would play it for ages. Then I reinstalled it recently and was like "holy shit this is easy".
Here's some of the first city I made since that reinstall... now available on the Unreal 3 engine.

Because I'm lazy, I only have 2 next gen conversions.
NEXT GEN
The first is some bloom, shadow accentuation, brown, lens flare, water, etc...
OH GOD IS THAT SOME 3D? oh no, it's just the perspective tool, along with some "clever" fog.
Will accept more ideas for NEXT GEN conversions in the comments box.

NEXT GEN - June 21
THIS WEEK ON NEXT GEN, WE RUIN PLANTS VS ZOMBIES.
I know that I said I'd be doing relatively old games, but I really wanted to do Plants vs Zombies. I mean, it's not like it's the most graphically intense game ever, anyway, right?
So I joined Survival Endless and battled thousands of zombies and got to 295 flags and then my plants all died heroic yet gluttony deaths.
haha just kidding i joined Survival: Pool (easy) and set up a real basic defense and took a screeny just before the end. Here it is:
Original Screenshot
So first comes first, I added some basic effects. Brown and lens flare displayed below (respectively)
And here's the final result, with some bloom and shadow accentuation added in.
Extra bloom just for shits and giggles:

NEXT GEN - June 14
Oh shit it's a blog post. My first one, today is a historic day etc. Anyway to kick things off I thought I'd start a weekly segment (if you know what Valve Time is, that can apply here). I take a relatively old game, get a screenshot of it, modify the hell out of it so it looks almost like a characature of some NEXT GEN MODERN GRAPHICS BLOOM game. Which means:
- lots of brown
- lots of bloom
- lots of desaturation
- stupid "post-processing" effects
Original Screenshot:
Unfortunately I don't have the original screenshot so here's a simple brown-filter one
EDIT: I found the screenshot on the second page of a Google Images search for "super metroid", hurr. Here it is.
More Nextgen
Left: Some simple bloom and lighting effects, including lens flare...
Right: BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
So then after having shown my friend these screenshots he said "Super Mario RPG". So I loaded up ZSNES and took a screenshot.
Original Screenshot:
I couldn't be bothered getting an actual battle shot so I just ran into an enemy and pressed F10 (hooray for FRAPS)
MOAR NEXT GEN
Brown layer, highlight bloom (and even a touch of midtone bloom).
Followed by even MORE bloom and some desaturation. This is actually looking a bit more PS2/XBOX/GC era but you get the idea.
And if anyone manages to stumble upon this blog, give me a comment as to what game I should do next.
